Cane Toad in the Hole

This is the Aussie version of the ‘Toad in a Hole’ (from the UK I believe), here is our Cane Toad in a Hole!

This one goes back to the beginning of sandwich press time. About the time of the very first ham and cheese toastee the office nomad found themselves searching for something, something different. One man turned that dream into reality when he  cut a hole in a piece of bread, placed it on a press and cracked an egg into that hole. We’ve come a long way since those early days and the modern day Cane Toad in the Hole is now seen to support – salami, mushrooms, cheese, tomato sauce and most importantly bacon and also with optional dragons.

Ingredients
  • 4 pieces Bread Thick or toast sliced bread works best.
  • 4 eggs
  • 4 slices salami Can substitute with bacon or anything else really.
  • 4 slices cheese Your preferred type of cheese, we have used a cheddar today.
Instructions
  1. First you need to cut the hole, we use a cup and press down to get a nice round hole. You could also just use a knife.
  2. Place bread on sandwich press and add eggs into the holes, one egg per slice of bread.
  3. Add you salami (or substitution, ie bacon) to the hole.
  4. Add some cheese and put the 'lid' on your hole, close the sandwich press gently and leave cooking for about 5 minutes.
  5. Once the bread/egg starts to turn a lovely golden colour, your Cane Toad in a Hole are ready to be served!
  6. Serve up and enjoy, add you favourite condiment/sauce for some extra flavour. Goes well served with some Spinach leaves and tomato slices.
